Back to the Street without Joy: Counterinsurgency Lessons from Vietnam and Other Small Wars

چکیده

I n 1961, Bernard Fall, a scholar and practitioner of war, published a book entitled The Street Without Joy. The book provided a lucid account of why the French Expeditionary Corps failed to defeat the Viet Minh during the Indochina War, and the book’s title derived from the French soldiers’sardonic moniker for Highway 1 on the coast of Indochina—“Ambush Alley,” or the “Street without Joy.” In 1967, while patrolling with US Marines on the “Street without Joy” in Vietnam, Bernard Fall was killed by an improvised explosive mine during a Viet Cong ambush. In 2003, after the fall of Baghdad and following the conventional phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom, US and Coalition forces operating in the Sunni Triangle began fighting a counter-guerrilla type war in which much of the enemy insurgent activity occurred along Highway 1, another street exhibiting little joy. Learning from the experience of other US counterinsurgencies is preferable to the alternative. The US military has had a host of successful experiences in counterguerrilla war, including some distinct successes with certain aspects of the Vietnam War. However, the paradox stemming from America’s unsuccessful crusade in the jungles of Vietnam is this—because the experience was per-

RENAL INJURIES IN MASHHAD UNIVERSITY DURING THE IRAN-IRAQ WAR. A COMPARISON WITH WORLD WARS I AND II, AND VIETNAM

Missile injuries of the kidney are rare even in wartime. Of 4500 patients admitted to the Ghaem Medical Center in the first two years of the Iran-Iraq war, only 96 had injuries of the genitourinary tract (2.1 %) and only 35 involved the kidney usually with multiple injuries to other viscera. The mortality for those with urogenital injuries was 8.3% (compared with World War I, 60% and World...

Structural Vulnerabilities of Networked Insurgencies: Adapting to the New Adversary

T he ongoing conflict in Iraq has sparked a renewed interest in the study of counterinsurgency, leading many to comb the wars of the twentieth century, the “golden age of insurgencies,” for lessons that can be applied to today. Much of this recent analysis has focused on the knowledge gained from fighting Marxist revolutionaries. The insurgent of today, however, is not the Maoist of yesterday. ...

Nonlinear Bending Analysis of Functionally Graded Plates Using SQ4T Elements based on Twice Interpolation Strategy

This paper develops a computational model for nonlinear bending analysis of functionally graded (FG) plates using a four-node quadrilateral element SQ4T within the context of the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). In particular, the construction of the nonlinear geometric equations are based on Total Lagrangian approach in which the motion at the present state compared with the initia...

A Four Dimensional Model of Insurgency and the Centrality of ?Perception and Polarization? to Strategic Success

This paper presents a four dimensional model of insurgency/counterinsurgency that identifies military, structural, functional and ‘perception and polarization’ as the major pillars of an insurgent movement or counterinsurgency strategy. While the four pillars are distinct, the more interdependently they operate the greater the likelihood of holistic strategic success. This article argues that a...

Back to the Future? The Lessons of Counterinsurgency for Contemporary Peace Operations

A recent consensus has emerged within peace operations doctrine validating “robust” or “assertive” peacekeeping as an effective mechanism to intervene in complex and volatile intrastate conflicts. The assertion of the validity of “robust peacekeeping” is problematic due to a lack of empirical evidence supporting the application of this management tool. Yet the similarity between the context and...
